Financial Date Nights

“Nearly 40% of couples who live together don't know how much their partner makes—experts say that's a problem.” -CNBC

Love and money is a tricky combination.

"People are more comfortable getting physically naked with somebody than financially naked.” (CNBC)

Oftentimes it can be uncomfortable because our culture has put money in the ‘taboo’ category.

Sometimes people will feel a bit of shame when talking about money. We don’t want to discuss how much we make or any debt we may have.

But as the relationship experts say, ‘communication is key.’

And if we want to set up for success ourselves as individuals and our relationships, then we have to find a way.

“44% of respondents tell Fidelity that they argue about money with their spouse occasionally, while 1 in 5 say money is their biggest relationship challenge.”

We’re all here today because we agree that learning how to manage our personal finances is important.

And we’re probably all in our relationships because we have decided our relationship is important to us.

So to protect our finances and our relationships we have to break the ice and start the conversation.

We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to our partner.

But we don’t have to necessarily sit down with a spreadsheet and an agenda.

We can start off with a bottle of wine, our favorite TV show and the willingness to ask the first question in order to break the ice.

Then next time we’ll bring our spreadsheet ;)
